The Hotel Xcaret calendar has roughly five events worth planning your trip around — and roughly five more worth planning your trip away from. The big-deal cultural festivals are genuinely great experiences when you go intentionally and frustrating when they sneak up on you and double your room rate.

After five stays across different seasons, here's the honest annual rundown.

The big four to plan around

These are the events that meaningfully change the experience — for the better if you want them, for worse if you don't.

Festival of Life and Death Traditions (late October to early November)

Mexican Day of the Dead, scaled up into a multi-day cultural festival at Xcaret park. Altars (ofrendas) throughout the park, traditional Mexican music, candlelit processions, indigenous dance performances, special menus at the park restaurants, and a beautifully somber atmosphere that's a meaningful step away from the usual sunny-resort energy.

Typically runs from roughly October 30 through November 2, with associated programming for the week or so on either side. Hotel Xcaret guests get included entry to all the festival programming via the All-Fun-Inclusive bracelet.

What it's like to attend: dramatic, moving, and crowded. The park stays open later, the evening shows are festival-themed, and the food at the cultural-village area is some of the best on-property eating you'll do all year. Pricing impact: hotel rates climb 25–40% during the festival week. Book 3–4 months in advance for the best room availability.

Sound of Xcaret / Sonoro (November)

A multi-day music festival held inside Xcaret park, typically running for one weekend in mid-November. 30+ artists across genres — Latin pop, regional Mexican, electronic, occasional international acts — playing on multiple stages throughout the park grounds.

Hotel Xcaret guests on All-Fun-Inclusive typically get general admission included; VIP and reserved-seating areas require an upcharge. Worth knowing in advance because it's a real production — production-level lighting, sound systems, food vendors, the whole thing.

Pricing impact: festival weekend rates climb 30–50%. Surrounding nights climb 10–15%. Book 4–6 months ahead for the festival itself.

If music festivals are not your scene: the rest of the resort doesn't shut down, but the energy of the property shifts noticeably toward festival-goer for those few days. Ear-plug-availability situation in the rooms closest to Xcaret park.

Christmas and NYE (December 24 through January 2)

The single biggest week of the year. Special decorations across the property, themed dinners, gala NYE celebration with multi-course meals, fireworks over the resort, costume parties, the works.

NYE specifically: the hotel runs a property-wide gala with a seated multi-course dinner, an open-bar after-party, and fireworks visible from most of the resort. It is a real production and a real cost — typically a per-person supplement on top of the already-elevated holiday rate.

Pricing impact: enormous. Holiday-week rates can be 70–100% higher than mid-December. Most rates are not for partial stays — you'll book the full week, not just NYE itself.

Booking timing: 6+ months in advance, often more. Suite categories sell out 9–12 months ahead. Many returning guests rebook for the next year before they leave.

Easter / Holy Week (Semana Santa)

Late March or early April, depending on the year. This is the peak of Mexican domestic tourism — the resort fills with Mexican families on the country's biggest cultural-religious holiday, and the vibe is wonderfully Mexican but extremely full.

What changes: dining rooms are at maximum capacity, kids' club is fully booked, park days are at the highest crowd levels of the year, and the dinner reservation system requires booking on day one of arrival or you lose your week of dinners.

Pricing impact: 30–50% over mid-March / mid-April rates. Book 3+ months in advance.

If you can shift dates one week earlier or later, the value improves dramatically.

Mid-tier events worth knowing about

These are smaller events that don't change the resort character much but do affect specific weeks.

US college spring break (late February through early April)

Doesn't hit Hotel Xcaret hard — the resort doesn't market to the spring-break party crowd and the rate point keeps most college students away — but it does affect Playa del Carmen and the broader Riviera Maya tourism infrastructure. Off-property excursions and PdC restaurants are busier. Prices climb at competitor resorts that do market to the spring-break crowd.

US Thanksgiving week (late November)

A meaningful US-traveler bump in the four days around Thanksgiving. Hotel runs full or near-full, prices climb 15–25%, dinner reservations get tight. Outside of Thanksgiving Thursday itself, the rest of the week is normal-November-busy.

Mexican summer holiday (mid-July through late August)

Mexican school holidays drive a meaningful Mexican-domestic-tourism bump in mid-summer. Resort fills with Mexican families, kids' club is busy, the energy is more family-domestic and less international. Prices are summer-shoulder, not premium, despite the volume.

Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends (US)

Three- and four-day US holiday weekends bring a small bump. Not transformative — typically 10–15% rate increases for those weekends — but worth knowing if your trip dates are flexible.

The minor seasonal programming

Hotel Xcaret runs smaller in-house events throughout the year that aren't trip-defining but add to the experience if your dates land on them:

• Tequila and mezcal pairings — held at Cocina de Mexicana on a roughly monthly basis. Free for All-Fun-Inclusive guests, requires reservation.
• Wine tastings — at HA' and at the cellar at Casa de la Playa, monthly. Some included, some upcharged.
• Cooking classes at the Arte cooking house — weekly, usually free with All-Fun-Inclusive.
• Mixology classes at the lobby bar — occasional, drop-in.
• Yoga and meditation retreats — quarterly multi-day events at Arte. Meaningful upcharge but high-quality programming.
• Art and ceramics workshops at the Arte 10 Houses — ongoing, mostly free with All-Fun-Inclusive.

Which events are worth planning your trip around

My honest ranking after five stays:

1. Festival of Life and Death — best cultural experience on the calendar. Worth flying in for if you've never seen Day of the Dead at scale. Goes deep on Mexican tradition without feeling commodified.
2. Early December (the underrated week) — not technically an "event" but the holiday-decorated property at off-peak rates is one of the best windows of the year.
3. Sound of Xcaret — only if you genuinely want a music festival. Otherwise the festival weekend can be too much.
4. NYE — beautiful production, expensive, sold out 9 months ahead. Worth doing once if your budget supports it.
5. Easter / Holy Week — only if you want the Mexican-family cultural experience at full intensity. Otherwise shift your dates.

What I'd do differently

The best surprise of any of my Hotel Xcaret stays was landing during the front edge of Festival of Life and Death without planning for it. The property, the food, the music, the cultural programming — all of it was richer than my standard non-festival stays. The worst surprise was landing during peak Holy Week without realizing it. Same property, dramatically different experience, and I'd booked at peak prices without getting any of the resort-wide enhancements that justify them.

The lesson I've taken: check the festival calendar before you book. Time your trip into a major cultural event intentionally, or time it well outside one. The middle ground — a stay that overlaps with the booking-week impact of a festival you don't actually attend — is the worst of both worlds.
