The history — how this all happened

Miguel Quintana Pali, a Mexican architect, bought 12 hectares of jungle near Playa del Carmen in the early 1980s, intending to build himself a house. How they connect

Hotel Xcaret resort sits adjacent to Xcaret park, but they're walled off from each other. Hotel guests don't wander into the park casually — there are separated entrances.

The connection is by boat. The hotel's underground river network includes a stretch that runs into Xcaret park. Hotel guests catch the boat shuttle from a dock inside the resort, float down the river, and disembark at a private hotel-only entrance inside the park. It's the most distinctive feature of the property and the thing I like most about staying there.

Day-trippers don't use this boat. They drive (or shuttle) to the main park entrance off Highway 307 and enter through the standard gates.

What's confusing — and what I clarify for friends

Friends often ask me "are you staying AT Xcaret or just going TO Xcaret?" I get the question all the time. The brand confusion is real and Grupo Xcaret hasn't done much to fix it.

A few clarifications I make regularly:

• Hotel Xcaret is one of three hotels (México, Arte, Casa de la Playa). When people say "Hotel Xcaret" without specifying, they usually mean México.
• The park is older than the hotel. Most reviews and photos that come up when you search "Xcaret" are about the park, not the hotel.
• You can do the park without ever touching the hotel. And many do.
