Xcaret in February: Weather, Whales, and Honest Crowd Forecast

February at Xcaret is a slightly different version of January. Same dry-season weather, same low humidity, same clear water — but a different crowd shape because of Valentine's, Presidents Day, and the front edge of US college spring break. I've done one full February trip and a long Presidents Day weekend, and the month genuinely splits into three pricing zones depending on which week you pick.

Here's the breakdown.

February weather

Daytime highs 76 to 83 Fahrenheit. Overnight lows around 70. About 1.5 inches of rain across the month, slightly less than January. Water temperature 78 to 79 degrees. Humidity at annual low.

This is dry-season weather at its best — cool enough that you're not sweating through dinner, warm enough that the pool is comfortable all day. Statistically the driest month of the year at the Riviera Maya.

Crowds and the calendar

February runs in three waves:

• First week of February — relatively quiet. Post-MLK lull, pre-Valentine's. Good value window.
• Valentine's week (roughly February 11 through 17) — couples-heavy on property. Lots of honeymoon programming. Romance pricing premium kicks in. Casa de la Playa books out months ahead.
• Presidents Day weekend (third weekend) — US-family bump, especially Friday through Tuesday.
• Late February — front edge of US college spring break. Mostly hits Cancun and Playa del Carmen, less so Hotel Xcaret which doesn't market to that crowd.

Net for the month: heavier than January overall but still below the December peak.

Pricing tier

Three tiers in one month. First-week rates similar to mid-January. Valentine's-week rates climb 20 to 30%. Presidents Day weekend has a small bump. Late February rates settle back near first-week levels.

If you're not on a Valentine's mission, book the first week of February for the best rate-to-weather ratio.

Major events in February

The big February draw is the resort's Valentine's programming — special couples menus at most restaurants, sunset rituals on the beach, romance packages at the spa. If you're booking specifically for the Valentine's experience, you're paying for it but you're also getting it.

Off-property, whale-watching season runs January through March on the Yucatán Peninsula side, with February being prime time for sightings of migrating humpback and minke whales further south near Banco Chinchorro. From Hotel Xcaret you'd need to do a full-day excursion south — possible but a real commitment.

The Riviera Maya itself isn't a major whale-watching destination compared to Baja, but the offshore boat tours sometimes spot pods this time of year.

What to wear in February

Same as January — daytime light layers, evening cover-up. February gets slightly warmer in the afternoons but the evenings still cool down enough for a long-sleeve layer. The Xcaret packing checklist has the full list.

If you're going for Valentine's, pack one nice outfit for the romance dinner — most couples dress up for it.

Best parks for February

Identical to January — the dry-season weather makes every park comfortable.

• Xenotes for the small-group cenote tour, especially good in February cool air
• Xel-Há for an easy whole-resort day
• Xcaret park at night for the evening show, comfortable evening temperatures
• Cozumel ferry for a snorkel day — water clarity is at annual peak in February

Photography conditions

February light is comparable to January — low humidity, clean distance shots, strong morning and late-afternoon golden hour. Sunrise around 6:40 AM, sunset around 6:10 PM. Days are getting longer.

Late afternoon at Xcaret in February is the best photography window of the year for landscape and architectural shots. The humidity is low enough to see all the way to the horizon and the light angle is forgiving.

Pricing strategy

If you're a couple specifically wanting the Valentine's experience, book it 4 to 6 months ahead and accept the premium. The programming is real and the property leans into it.

If you just want a great February trip, book the first week or the very last week. Same weather, much better pricing, easier reservations.

What I'd do differently

The Valentine's trip we did was great but I'd noticed how much we were paying for "Valentine's at a couples resort" versus what we'd actually paid for on similar trips outside that week. The branded romance package included things — rose petals, sparkling wine, a beach dinner — that I would have separately paid for and gotten more of in another week.

If I were doing a couples trip in February tomorrow, I'd book the first week of February, separately add a beach dinner from the Casa de la Playa luxury review menu, and skip the branded Valentine's premium. Same romance, lower bill.
