Xcaret in December: Christmas, NYE, and the Premium-Pricing Reality
Reviewed for accuracy on Nov 18, 2025

December at Xcaret is two completely different trips depending on which two weeks you book. The first half of the month is one of the best windows of the entire year — peak dry-season weather, low humidity, and prices closer to November than to peak. The Christmas-through-NYE window is the most expensive period of the year and books out 6 to 8 months ahead at premium rates. I've done both versions; here's the breakdown.
December weather
Daytime highs 76 to 83 Fahrenheit. Overnight lows around 70. Roughly 2.5 inches of rain across the month, in occasional brief passes. Humidity at annual low. Water temperature 79 to 80 degrees.
December is essentially identical to January in weather. Clear, dry, comfortable for walking-tour days, cool enough for an evening layer. Among the best weather months of the year.
Crowds and the calendar
December runs in three distinct phases:
- December 1 through 18 — under-the-radar best window of the whole year. Same weather as January, prices closer to November, much lower crowds than late month.
- December 19 through 24 — building toward Christmas peak. Crowds and prices climbing.
- December 25 through January 2 — single most expensive period of the year. Property at maximum occupancy. Restaurants book a week ahead. NYE programming runs.
If you can swing the dates, the first two weeks of December are the most overlooked value window in the calendar.
Pricing tier
Mid-tier rates the first 18 days. Premium pricing the last week. December 26 through January 2 is the absolute peak — often 60 to 80% above November rates and frequently requiring full-week minimum stays.
Major events in December
The big December events:
- Christmas resort programming — full property decorations, special menus, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners, kids' programming, Posada celebrations leading up to Christmas
- NYE gala — major production with themed dinner, live entertainment, fireworks over the property, midnight celebration
- Sound of Xcaret tail — sometimes the music festival programming carries into early December
The Hotel Xcaret events calendar covers the full December programming.
NYE specifically: the resort runs a major themed gala with assigned-table dinners across multiple venues, premium open bar (above the standard All-Fun Inclusive program), live music, and fireworks. The cost is real and built into the holiday-week pricing — there's no opt-out at most rates. The fireworks are genuinely spectacular and visible across most of the property.
What to wear in December
Light layers for daytime, real evening cover-up. December evenings can drop into the high 60s with a breeze, and the rooftop bars get cool. Pack one nice outfit per traveler for the holiday dinners — Christmas Eve and NYE are dressier evenings.

Best parks for December
December weather makes every park comfortable.
- Xcaret park — peak comfort. Both daytime and the evening show work great. The park itself is decorated for Christmas.
- Xenotes — December cenote temperatures contrast nicely with the cool-but-not-cold air.
- Xel-Há — comfortable lazy river day.
- Xplor and Xplor Fuego — both work in December conditions.
The eco-parks are decorated for the holidays in December, which is a meaningful add-on to the daytime visits.
Photography conditions
December light is among the best of the year. Low humidity, clear distance shots, golden-hour light at sunrise and sunset. The Christmas decorations are extensively photogenic — illuminated trees, traditional Mexican poinsettias, holiday installations across the property.
Sunrise around 6:50 AM, sunset around 5:35 PM. Short days but quality light.
December is the only month where the resort itself becomes a Christmas-photo subject. The lobby tree at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is real and large; the lights on the river bridges are subtle and beautiful.

Pricing strategy
The three-trip rule for December:
- Holiday-week premium trip — book Christmas through NYE 6 to 8 months ahead. Accept the cost. Get the experience.
- Early-December value trip — book December 1 to 14, get November-level prices for January-quality weather. Best value-quality combo of the month.
- Mid-December standard trip — December 15 to 21 is a slight bump from early month but still well below holiday peak. Useful if you can't book the very first two weeks.
For couples, the early-December window is the answer for "we want winter weather without holiday pricing." The couples romantic guide covers what to do once you're there.
What I'd do differently
My first Xcaret trip was Christmas through New Year's. The decorations were beautiful, the NYE fireworks were memorable, and I paid roughly 70% more than I'd paid for the same room category ten days earlier. The trip was great. The premium was real.
The second December trip was December 8 through 14. Same weather, half the crowd, restaurants available on first ask, and a meaningfully lower bill. That's the version I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't specifically need to be on property for Christmas or NYE.
The December rule: unless you specifically want Christmas or NYE programming, book the first two weeks of the month. The weather is identical, the property is decorated, and the cost is dramatically lower.
For broader context, the best time to visit Xcaret by month compares December to other months. For NYE-specific planning, the Hotel Xcaret events calendar has the gala details.
